Panta rhei (Ancient Greek πάντα ῥεῖ, "everything flows") is an aphorism that goes back to the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, alluded to by Plato (in the dialogue Kratylos) but first used literally by the Neoplatonist Simplicios in late antiquity to characterize Heraclitean doctrine. Its Latin translation is found in the 15th book of the Metamorphoses in the "Speech of Pythagoras," in which Ovid outlines the natural philosophical basis of his Metamorphoses. Plato links these thoughts: "Everything changes and nothing stands still."
