Jazzbar Special: Listen To Hammond And Sax Jazz Bands

Hans-Bernd Kittlaus puts on recordings by well-known and lesser-known organists. Free admission.

After the Hammond organ was invented in the 1930s, it first established itself in American churches that could not afford a pipe organ. From there it began its triumphal march into many musical genres, especially jazz. Organists like Wild Bill Davis and Jimmy Smith popularised the Hammond in jazz, often in bands with saxophone. This combination became an important part of soul jazz in the 1960s with musicians like Eddie Lockjaw Davis + Shirley Scott, Jack McDuff and Richard "Groove" Holmes and is still cultivated today, for example by Dr. Lonnie Smith and Joey DeFrancesco.
