»Soul Eyes«

Berühmt werden Songs oft durch Interpretation – hier waren es John Coltrane (sax) und McCoy Tyner (p),die gemeinsam mit Jimmy Garrison (b) und Elvin Jones (dr) diesem Stück von Mal Waldron vollkommen neue Seiten abgewannen und es zu einer großartigen Ballade machten. Nein, »Soul Eyes« ist nicht von Coltrane, wie man meinen könnte, da er doch ein Album auch unter diesen Eröffnungstitel stellte. Deshalb hier dieses Album als großes Vergnügen mit John Coltrane:

Mal Waldron selbst hat später sein Stück mehrfach in Eigeninterpretation aufgenommen. Eine gelungene Version ist diejenige mit Steve Lacy (Sax) und Jean-Jacques Avenel aus dem Jahr 2002:

Aber die Melodie wurde auch von großem Orchester adaptiert. Die Sängerin Kandace Springs, Leo Janssen (sax) und Bart van Lier (trb), den wir auch, schon im King Georg begrüßen durften, machten die Aufnahme des Metropole Orchesters (Leiter: Jules Buckley) zu einem tollen Erlebnis:
